IT HAS been 30 years since Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon and Richmond truly constituted ''the big four''. In the pivotal season of 1981, Carlton and Collingwood played off in one of their storied grand finals, while the Bombers began their revival under a determined ex-Richmond back pocket.

Just to be a sh!t stirrer...

Amazing How only two of the "big four" are in the top four...

Yes and we got the enlightened Edie calling us the " fifth Beatle" Fair dinkum, one flag and he reckons everyone just bows in the Pies shadow. Name any kpi and we are clearly number two by a street. Membership, Financials, facilities, cash flow, you name it.

We are also second in loud mouthed club Presidents.

In a sense, the big four is a false construct, since it is based only upon the perceived size of clubs' supporter bases, rather than results. The Blues, Pies, Dons and Tigers have not participated in the same finals series since 1973. Hawthorn, which has 50,000-plus members (8500 or so in Tasmania), has won 10 flags in 50 years and can bring decent crowds to the MCG, has strong grounds for inclusion in the big four

We've actually got 55,000+ members (8200 or so in Tasmania) but whose counting?

Hawthorn benefitted from the 80's by getting a bucket load of youngsters taking up the Brown and Gold, with success and personalities.

This translated, as Dermie predicted, into fully fledged members this past decade, as many of us came into working age and able to afford memberships and attend games.

We are seeing a similar period now, with the likes of Buddy and Rioli, bringing people through the gate, and more youngsters trying to emulate them.

This notion of the Big 4 is antique. When it comes to success as a club as a whole, there is only a Big 1 ... Hawthorn.

Fifth beatle is a bckhanded compliment. the fifth beatle was arguably just behind lennon and mccartney in importance.

But I dont see why its such an earner. BFers are always telling us how these clubs supporters turn up even in bad times - it makes little difference to overall earnings where they are on the ladder really.

Its probably a bonanza for herald sun and age journalists
