More on the Cripps issue from the Age.

West isn’t best: why Cripps looks to stay Blue

West Coast and Fremantle are not expected to be strong suitors for Carlton’s star free agent and Western Australian Patrick Cripps, who rival clubs think is certain to re-sign with the Blues.

While Carlton have some distance to travel in negotiations over Cripps, who is one of the game’s most valued free agents this year - along with Bulldog Marcus Bontempelli, Giant Josh Kelly and Essendon’s Zach Merrett - the view of clubs and industry sources is that the superstar midfielder is not gettable and that it is only a question of the terms - such as the length of contract - that he reaches with the Blues.

The prospect of the Carlton skipper returning to Western Australia is viewed as highly improbable, according to industry sources, in large part because Cripps wants to stay with Carlton, whose salary cap position - and prospect of bringing in further seasoned quality recruits - will hinge on the amounts they pay Cripps and key forward Harry McKay, who is also coming off contract this year.

Rising star Sam Walsh, the club’s standout player this year, is coming out of contract next year and the Blues, who have been interested in Essendon’s Merrett, may need to find space by letting a player go if they are to pursue a major target, industry sources said.
But even if Cripps entertained the Perth clubs, West Coast and Fremantle, like many clubs, would find it difficult to find room for a player that will command the $800,000-$1millon that the Carlton skipper would command if he exercised his rights as a free agent.
The Eagles have little salary-cap room, having told their playing group that they would not bring in any expensive players unless players of similar cost left the club. The Eagles made this commitment to the players when they organised an across-the-board pay cut of seven per cent for this season only.

Industry sources say the Dockers also have a tight salary cap, in part due to the contracts paid to West Australians who returned home, such Rory Lobb, Nathan Wilson, Reece Conca and Blake Acres. Skipper Nathan Fyfe’s (pre-COVID) salary exceeds $1 million a year (an estimated $6.5 million over six years) and runs until the end of 2023.

The Dockers will have a tight salary cap again at the end of this season, sources said, but that space would open up for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. They have chosen to go to the draft over the past two post-seasons after the ill-fated acquisition of Jesse Hogan from the Demons.

The length of contract that the Blues are prepared to offer their co-skipper is the most intriguing question for the free agent’s negotiation, given the battering that the champion has taken as arguably the game’s best inside midfielder and the relative lack of support he has received.

Some observers within the game wonder whether the new rules - which open up space and could result in fewer stoppages, placing more emphasis on leg speed - will suit the Carlton superstar, although he was superb against a fleet-footed Richmond in round one.

Carlton insiders also note that Cripps hails from some distance from Perth - he comes from Northhampton, which is nearly five hours from the WA capital, so he has less incentive to “come home”.

Merrett would be a good get for some club. If the Bombers finish bottom 4, and Merrett wants to go would they match knowing they'd get low 1st rounder.

Geez there are some good examples of why not to overpay at the trade table atm.

Brad Hill big bucks cost good picks and the kids are passing him.

Shiel at Essendon. Big bucks, two 1sts. Hasnt been that good and now injured.

Hogan to Freo. Fail.

One the other side who has cost lots in $ and picks and delivered? Judd, yes. Then???

Danger? Reckon Kelly will deliver too.

Dayne Beams another example of a big trade that went bust.

There's been heaps over the years.
Tom Lynch, Lachie Neale, Ablett to GC etc etc.

Not a fan of getting Cripps, pass on that for me.

HOWEVER

I would be fully in on, going hell for leather, to get Chad Warner to come home from Sydney to join our mighty Club :westcoast:.

Judd was good, but never as electric as he was with us. And we won at the trade on that one as well.

So you are very right. Don't overpay, but most do. Doesn't happen every time, but these things tend to be a sellers market.

Agree wholeheartedly.

Weller for pick 2 is another. Weller is handy, but adding Brayshaw to the GC on ball division would make it damn good. Weller will always be a bit of a tease IMO.

Knowing GC they would have taken Spuddy Dow though

I wonder if Coniglio has a flexible contract like Kelly?

If he comes out of contract and is a FA I could see them letting him go to help solve their cap problems. Also feel he would come and play for us for less that what he is on now, like a reasonable amount.

The Giants have a very bad smell about them ATM. Talk about wasting your career.

If took a while to acknowledge Cogs wouldn't ever be coming to WC, just as it did Daniel Rich. Don't tease me.

Brayshaw will go top 5 in the Brownlow IMO (excluding suspended players, so realistically top 10)
We're talking about the Brayshaw at Freo? I view him as a high accumulation, low hurt factor. Cerra looked better to me.

I haven't seen either of their games this year, so if he's gone to another level then fair enough.

I’d say he has gone another level, plus accumulators are exactly who win brownlows. He’s much better than Angus for example, who was top 2-3 one year.

I rate him, I get why people might not though

You should put a few bucks on with the goal of cashing out. He's paying $67, which is more than Gaff at $41. We know how Gaff has started.

Brayshaw just needs to continue polling coaches votes and his odds will shorten. He's the only player from Freo who polled R1 and he's equal votes with Mundy on 10.

I’m not much of a gambler but it could fund some new homebrewing equipment...
