Autopsy 14 point win vs GWS/Umpires

My enjoyment of the AFL has diminished greatly over the last 10 years and this game was a perfect encapsulation of why.

The AFL is run by a bunch of incompetent nitwits who are more concerned with feasting at the trough and maintaining there's and their friends positions in the AFL than actually doing anything of value.

The umpiring, which approached the quality of the 2016 grand final, made what should have been a stirring and exciting game into a frustrating reminder that the AFL admin will continue to try and kill the golden goose to make just one more dollar.

They will never try and "fix" the umpiring nor even admit there is an issue, if they did someone might start asking questions as to who is to blame and what changes need to be made and that may result in one of the boys club members being dislodged from the organisation and we just can't have that.

So the AFL will continue on with fans hoping the administrators of the game rise to a level of mediocrity that at this stage seems so far in the distance.

On the bright side ;)
Wicks hasn't missed a beat after his week off and is continuing to show that he is this years biggest improvement to the side.
McInerney still needs to improve his awareness in contests and make some better decisions but his clearance work for someone who is not an inside mid was very promising and he is showing the ability to be able to rack up disposals and have an impact across four quarters.
Warner looks to be coming close to his best and is just so hard to stop in the chaos of the contest.
And lastly the commitment and trust from the coaches to play both Hamling and Francis and give them the responsibility to stop their defender from taking easy intercept marks was great to see. I was never a Longmire hater but even I could see that his unwillingness to man up on defenders, who would often kill us with intercept marking and rebound, was very damaging in more than a few games.

HTB rule felt a hot mess today, not sure how we stop players automatically ducking
Pay a free for intentionally putting yourself in danger.

I mean they pay frees for anything anyway. Half the ruck frees are comical - the ruckmen themselves have no idea whose free it is.

They cleaned up the stand the mark easily. Make it a free IF you duck or simply give an instruction that if the ump believes contact was accentuated in any way do not pay a free - after a few HTB's or non decsions it goes away.

Of course that leaves another whole area of intepretation open but I have lost count on the way they stuff up the rules so whats another complication in the big scheme of things.

I guess they often can like today Greene ducked for a few and got pinged for HTB. It must be bloody hard to judge though

That had shades of 16 , dirty rotten cheating maggots , as for the Orange scum
McInerney much better , Wicks fantastic , a great effort by the forwards except Hayward and Cleary
Once again Campbell just not justifying his contract
Great gutsy enjoyable win , should've won by 8 goals

Can’t defend Hayward but I’ll take Cleary goal, 7 tackles , our 2nd most and his 26 pressure acts , our 2nd most

I don’t think I’ve seen a player kick as poorly as jmac today , he either missed his boot or just munged it. In saying that his intensity was great and has been missed

Rampe was simply awesome today, near flawless game

Heeney and Warner were back to their best

Great team win. Hopefully we can string a few together now

There were a few comments last week about us being pushed around by big bodies. We are a light-weight team. GWS have Tom Green in their midfield. At 24 he's listed as 192cm 92kg. We have no similar big-bodied midfielder.

After the Cats ran over the Magpies all the talk in the media was about Dangerfield, as a human battering ram. We know Danger too well. He's beaten us up a few times ('17 semi-final, '22 GF). He's an immensely powerful bull, listed at 189cm and 97kg.

Since the mid '22 retirement of Kennedy (188cm and 96kg) we've had no comparable bull, no battering ram who could smash through opposition. Dangerfield has a bit more speed than Joey did but Kennedy's ability to stick (and shake off) tackles was awesome.

Going back a little further we had Goodes (191cm and 100kg). He played much of his career as a classic ruck/rover or as a high marking forward but, putting aside a Brownlow medal for under-sized rucking, Goodes was in many ways even closer to Dangerfield, particularly in terms of pure explosive power and speed.

Would we be a more successful team if we still had a genuine bull or two? We know we can win many games with our full fleet of gutsy, fast and skilled players but perhaps we'd do much better in the sheer brutality of Grand Finals if we could dish out as much as we had to take. The last three Premiers have been teams with some big veteran bulls.

Had Goodes stayed around for our 2016 GF he might well have added another premiership medal to the two he had at home.

Had we been able to take Kennedy through to the '22 GF we might have put on a much better showing. He was our last true bull.

Pretty much the first game I've genuinely enjoyed this season. The big picture:
1) Pressure right up and maintained.
2) Handling much cleaner.
3) Looking for teammates and trusting them.
4) GWS wanted to fight. No backing down.
5) Many individuals played better.
Individuals:
Tom McCartin best game this year on Hogan.
Sam Wicks a really complete game.
Chad Warner a very unselfish game.
Heeney a kinda normal good game.
A number of players who had been criticised played better. Florent for instance. The only one I was disappointed in was Hayward. He really struggled to make a serious impact.
The regular and fringe players all contributed.
Replacing Melican for 1-4 weeks will be tricky. Probably move Hamling back and Ladhams back in.
Great post. Melican will be missed big time. Wicks has become a real weapon for us and seems to have got rid of any ill discipline. He has blistering pace. His kicking could be a bit better but he has been a revelation.

We had a 191cm 91 kg mid that Longmire insisted was a defender and we let go to Adelaide .

Mills is bigger than he looks

Gutsy response, just as we're used to from this team/club - we're lucky to support them.

Still plenty that was awful but something to go on given the paucity of talent we have to choose from at the moment.

Loved Cleary and Wicks' games, and brilliant response from JMac and Rampe in particular.

As others have noted, the umpiring was 2016 GF level bad, just blatantly different interpretations of the rules depending on which team was involved. The Heeney HTB was Hall of Infamy level bad - I've never seen hat ump before and can only assume the AFL was down a man and so picked up someone on the way to the ground that happened to have the right coloured vest on. Had quite evidently never attended a game of football in his life.

Really annoyed at Melican. Last thing we need is KP players missing unnecessary games.. now we'll have to reshuffle probably Hamling down back and pistol Pete back up forward.. frustrating
It was a poor piece of judgment, and given it's indefensible and he's a no-name, expect the AFL to throw the book at him.

You have definitely seen hat ump before, he's been doing it for 20 years. It's umpire Matthew Nicholls, or by his more commonly known crowd given nickname "that bald ****er!"

I had a tigers fan trying to tell me it was worse than what Noah Balta did and should be 10 weeks off 🙄

Had to laugh.

Expect he'll probably miss a month though. May not hurt as much against the Dees or Essendon (they have their own tall troubles) but will make our match against Crows almost impossible if all of Tex, Fog and Tillthorpe are playing

Warner is a beast when he's hunting for the contested ball & putting in defensive pressure. This performance should be his normal style of play moving forwards, he far too often looks just for the outside ball or does his damage in open play. We need him hunting inside a bit more too. Loved it.

I hope we don't reshuffle our fwd line to replace Melican in defence. Our fwd line somehow worked together, Hamling played a great defensive role, Francis looked dangerous with his leads, Melican applied physicality while Warner & Cleary provided pressure. We need Hayward to lift & that's it'll be a good solid fwd 6 moving forward. Each player with defined roles, maybe a tad slow but if the 3 smaller players can apply pressure I think it could be successful.
