TRAINING:- Tuesday 30th November
Sorry, it’s not going to be a comprehensive report today mainly because most of the drills appeared to be on the opposite side of the ground from where I was standing. Add to that the fact 4 of the new players did not have a number except for Nick Daicos (35) plus players wearing caps and it was difficult picking players out.
Players started arriving on the ground at around 9.30am and went through to 12.15 so it was a very good hit out in the 28deg heat. Senior players training were Pendlebury, Roughead, Sidebottom, Cox, Madgen, Howe, Maynard and Mihocek. I didn’t see any sign of Mark Keane or Nathan Kreuger. Not sure what happened with those two. Kreuger didn’t appear on the ground on Friday either.
Once again lots of the drills seemed to be focused on fast ball movement and mostly by foot and getting the ball into the forward line quickly with the build up starting from around the half backline. There was always one or two players running past ready for the kick or handball. Nick Daicos excelled in this and his disposal particularly by foot is superb whether a short pass or long kick to a leading forward. He also excelled in the many 50m sprints the players did. He obviously has good stamina too. Apart from Daicos, the only one of the new recruits I could pick out easily was Cooper Murley mainly because of his small stature. At 178cm and 70kg there really is not much of him but he seems to have excellent ball skills and speed. Arlo Draper and Harvey Harrison were hard to pick out from a distance so I can’t really comment on how they went. Charlie Dean looks to be a good size but once again it is hard to assess how he can play just yet.
It was good to see the coaches really getting involved and joining in lots of the drills. And certainly in the early part of pre-season that has been the case as well as really explaining to the players exactly what they want from them in the drills. Training looks a whole lot different from the last couple of seasons and the players really seem to be enjoying the new drills and buying into the different coaching methods.
Younger players I thought did well today were Nick Daicos (of course), Oliver Henry, Fin Macrae, Reef Mcinnes, Liam McMahon, Aiden Begg and Ash Johnson. Begg has very good ball skills for a big player even when the ball is on the ground. Johnson is also starting to look the part too but both he and Begg still have a lot of work to do on their stamina. I still think Isaac Chugg wil be a very good player for us on the back flank.
Apparently they are training again on Wednesday but I won’t be there until Friday. Go Pies.
