Is there a chance Treloar will just renegotiate his contract to avoid all this?
Why should he? This is between Collingwood and the Bulldogs, whoever of the two screwed up (maybe it was both) - Treloar rightly still gets the money owed from the contract he signed.

“they believed the contribution would be negotiated later, which is where things were left on the night the trade went through.

The Pies believe there was an agreement to get the trade through, and talk about the money later.”

Does anyone seriously believe the Dogs agreed to do a trade and just talk about the money and contribution later?

Anything is possible in dealing with the muppet show that is collingwood.

But if they genuinely believed this was the case, then it's a slam dunk that a deal was never reached, owing to a valid offer (incorporating all the terms) never existing.

You can't strike an agreement with an offer that only addresses part of the agreement.

You can't be half pregnant, and you can't have half an agreement- such a thing does not exist.

It's all or nothing, and if collingwood are claiming at this point that it's something inbetween- then the answer is that no agreement yet exists and the dogs could walk away at any point.

Given that the dogs could blow the whole thing up if they wanted and it is untenable (for the AFL's PR and collingwood) for treloar to return- by far the most likely outcome is that the AFL will smooth things over by paying the ~100k x5 difference between what the dogs will pay and what the pies will.

To be fair though, neither party, alongside AFL management, is coming out of this looking overly competent, lol

To be fair, as much as the current AFL admin piss me off, it's not their business to try and sort salary cap issues or problems at clubs.

I do not really see how The Dogs look really bad in this instance either, in recent years, Collingwood (esp Eddie) has always tried to pass the buck/blame others for their own ham fisted operations..

Just as a neutral/casual observer, this fiasco seems like a Gentleman's Agreement, which the Pies have reneged on.

Doesn’t say much for the Dogs either if there’s no evidence to corroborate our view. Piss poor from both sides and the afl.

Agreed, it's really weird with Lawyers running the show on Dogs side.

I can’t believe you didn’t get the deal in writing before agreeing to the trade.

Pies: sorry Adam we don’t want you, neither do the players, we want you out. If you come back expect a hostile welcome (We can no longer afford you).

pies: oh by the way we need to be adequately reimbursed for a player we no longer respect or want.

You’re having a laugh Collingwood.

The AFL isn’t on the hook for this. The trade was between 2 clubs - who are 100% responsible for managing their salary cap. If clubs aren’t managing their affairs correctly it’s on the clubs.

I think that in the original 3 way trade which included Essendon getting Dunkley, Collingwood would have got pick 7 in exchange for Treloar. They were prepared to pay more of his salary in exchange for such a high pick. When Bulldogs walked away from that and only offered pick 14 for Treloar, Collingwood were no longer prepared to pay so much of his salary. For some reason dogs assumed that Collingwood would still pay $300,000 a year even though they were getting a much poorer deal. Now both clubs have egg on their face and Treloar is in the middle.

The 3 way trade the Pies and Essendon cooked up without agreement from the Dogs. We didn’t walk away from it, it was never a consideration. It was ruled out pretty much before it was even offered when we made it very clear the 2 deals were separate.

The AFL isn’t on the hook for this.

They absolutely are.

They vet every single trade before it is allowed to occur.
Clearly the vetting system that the AFL uses to approve or deny trades only takes into account assessing the player and draft pick aspects of trades.

Which is fine for ~90% of trades- because it's probably only 1 in 10 (at most) trades that actually involve the old club paying some of the players salary.

And even then, in 99% of cases where the former club is chipping in- the clubs involved sort it out amongst themselves before lodging the trade.

It seems th his deal was 'done' in such a rush that the clubs themselves never properly nailed down a mutually agreeable trade and picks cost.

The AFL are certainly to blame because they ought to have known that:
A. these kinds of deals (where old clubs pay part of players wages) happen; and
B. their trade vetting process doesn't account for checking all the critical parts of such deals (ie draft cost AND salarly cost split)

The AFL have been caught with their pants down on this- the only shock is that it hasn't happened sooner with other trades that involve former clubs paying players.

The AFL have merely been saved (up to this point) by clubs having their act together more than the pies and dogs evidently do.

Treloar will get his full entitlements, the club that may have the problem is the Pies with their cap.

Not sure why this is Collingwood's problem to be honest. If the Dogs lodged the trade and didn't have any salary contributions documented, then they should be on the hook for all of it.

Do agree with the above though that the AFL's 'relaxed' stance to this s**t is also to blame. If they have their s**t together then all trades lodged will have this covered of.

Pretty disappointing that the Dogs would treat a newly recruited player with known issues with mental health with such disdain. Especially on top of recruiting an extra mid then refusing to trade a younger player for further opportunities to expand his career. Thought the dogs were better than that.

That’s rich coming from a Collingwood supporter have you seen how your club have treated him lol
