Round 17 pt 1
RD 17 FURLVB.png
The first clash of the round was played out at the Hippodrome, with the Bears coming in off an impressive 25-point win against the Dragons to keep their finals dreams alive, and the Furies coming off a 2-point loss to secure the spoon, there was nothing but mutual benefit with a BEars win.

Despite their best efforts to win, the Bears didn’t hold the lead after 3 minutes into the second quarter, allowing the Furies to finish off what was a disappointing season with a win. Piggy Smalls (6 goals) made the most of his opportunities, often provided by Elton Johns Wig (21 disposals and 3 marks) or GREENESHOOTS (19 disposals and 4 marks). Unsurprisingly, it took an all round team effort for the bears to lose to the Furies, with Muddiemoose (17 disposals, 12 hitouts and 4 tackles) and tony (19 disposals and 4 marks) the only two really showing up on the day.

The result meant there was no hope for the Bears to make finals even with an implosion from remaining contenders.

It wasn’t long ago that the Dragons looked safe and set for their finals campaign, that was before the 3 game losing streak they had heading into Round 17. Now part of a big pack looking to lock in finals, they came up against the Wonders, fresh off a comeback win against the swamprats and looking to lock in top 4.

I’d love to tell you it was a valiant effort from the Dragons in their battle to maintain a top 8 place, but it wasn’t, as they became victims to a SONIC BOOM (hey Pie 4 Life) from a Wonders outfit looking to go from spooners to premiers! Strigoi (13 disposals, 15 hitouts and 6 tackles) was the only major dream team scorer from the Dragons, with MC Bad Genius (17 disposals and 4 marks) putting in a decent effort as well. Mike123 (29 disposals, 4 marks and 3 goals) was unforgiving in victory, with croweater 41 (20 disposals, 10 hitouts and 3 goals), akkaps (19 disposals and 7 marks) and haydo (20 disposals and 4 tackles) offering a helpful hand.

With the loss, the Dragons looked destined to fall out of the finals, leaving captain serial_thrilla scrambling to organise Mad Monday.

The two sides came into the final round off of a loss, and with both well and truly in the thick of the contenders for the finals spots, it was crucial they get the win.

The contest see-sawed in the first half, with just the four lead changes but neither team getting any further than 2 goals in front, it was the edge of your seat contest that the fans wanted it to be. The second half started off looking like much of the same, but when the Hawks hit the front in the 3rd, they didn’t look back, ending up 23-point winners and locking in their spot for finals.

Golumless (17 disposals, 6 marks and 3 goals) was the best for the Hawks, followed by Zoops (22 disposals and 7 marks) and por_please_ya (22 disposals and 5 marks). League legend Biggie slotted 4 goals for the winners as well. The Roys boasted JackNah_8 (24 disposals and 11 hitouts) who won the ruck battle, assisted best by Aristotle Pickett (20 disposals and 5 tackles).

The Grand Final match up of Season 30 had a much different meaning in Season 31, but the equation was simple, the Rats needed a big win to secure a spot in the finals, and the Royals would be unaffected by the result regardless, given the Warriors had lost and they couldn’t make up the gap to finish as minor premiers.

The match was indeed thrilling, with 11 lead changes, no team ever leading by more than 3 goals and a rivalry that was yet to be resolved from the previous Grand Final fixture. Star Ruck Rover Marlowe (27 disposals, 5 tackles and 2 goals) was crucial, like a young Chris Judd, with MrPremiership (26 disposals and 9 marks) and spookism (28 disposals and 3 marks) also putting in big efforts. The Rats had the Brazilian dynamo GremioPower (25 disposals, 7 tackles and 3 goals) lead the way, with the likes of Ant Bear (31 disposals and 8 marks), philreich (27 disposals) and ant555 (34 disposals and 4 marks) not far behind, securing them the 2-point victory against the Royals.

Unfortunately, two points wasn’t enough to get the rats across the line, seeing their S31 campaign come to an end.

Round 17 pt 2
RD 17 GUMMBD.png
Gumbies FFC 12.13 (85) drew Mount Buller Demons 12.13 (85)
A match that was crucial for the top end of the finals rather than the bottom end, the Gumbies came in with 8 wins behind their back, looking to secure the top spot on the ladder and lock in a home first week of finals, whilst the Demons also came in with a win behind their back, and needed another to lock in their top 4 spot.

It was all Gumbies in the first half, with a 31 point at the main break and the Demons managing a measly 2 goals, captain Barrybran encouraged his team to relax and save themselves for finals. The Demons began to claw back, slowly, but surely, they would draw it back to just a 5 point margin at 3 quarter time. It would take 4 lead changes and a late goal from rookie Demon Heardy_101, but by god the Demons did it, they secured the draw! WHich would temporarily put them in a top 4 spot.

Some people's favourite dinner GWS Goose (24 disposals and 9 tackles) was arguably best on in the media, with skipper Barrybran (20 disposals, 8 hitouts and 2 goals) and wherearemykeys (15 disposals, 7 marks and 2 goals) were big contributors around the ground, as Rodney Dangerfield made a late Fred charge with 4 goals. Demons captain manangatang (22 disposals) led from the front, followed closely by pantskyle (20 disposals and 5 tackles) and moginie (27 disposals and 8 marks).
