Fox was serviceable up forward but I think Parker edges him out with his cleaner ball use. A little bit before he comes back but I'd probably swap fox and Roberts and leave Parker mostly up forward swapping with Heeney in the guts

Fox was apparently doing a job on Lever and Lever had a fairly quiet game which tells me Fox actually had a really good game. Lever can be a very damaging player if you let him.

I think the 3rd tall position will be a rotation with Ladhams, Reid and Buller all capable of playing AFL in 2024. Having said that, we're going to need to find some space for Parker, Adams and Mills.
I like Parker and Heeney as a resting third tall.

This is the way I see it, Swans are down by 4 in last quarter and we are entering the fifty, do I want Amartey or Parker / Heeney as the third tall?

There are too many positives to single out so I do want to touch on the three tallsThe three talls doesn’t work - hasn’t since the 1970s. Or at least since Carey longmire and Robert’s ran around for. North.

I also think we play too slow into the talls. Having come up to watch it was noticeable that there were frequent one on ones in the forward fifty when we took marks 60 out. Almost every time ended up being a bomb to the top of the square. When we sped up and looked to hit leading targets it looked like the talls were dangerous.

If we are going to play three talls kick it earlier into the forward fifty when we don’t end up with 20 guys in there.

I know it's only the first game, but Amartey is starting to give off strong Jesse White vibes.

Fox in the forward line was a forced move. I don't think Horse would have him up there if he had an alternative choice.

I love Fox, particularly in defence. But he's depth imo, but a great depth player to have, and one that will give us 100% effort. Those players are gold in a quest for a premiership.
Fox could be a perfect sub if squeezed out of the starting list

I think the best aspect of the win was the turnaround in contested footy from last year against one of the best contested sides. More inside 50s and more clearances made me feel like when the heat was on in the second half we just overwhelmed them. Looked like a lot of the close in handball work has improved and Grundy's physical presence made a massive difference. Instead of being overrun in the last quarter we did the opposite.
Heeney, Grundy and Blakey best for mine. Melican and Macartin both solid down back.
Feels like a better balance with our sharp kicking game and a strong contested game.
Bring on the Pies!

After last week, it just reinforces practice games mean nothing.

Unfortunately too humid tonight which contributed to a tough night for skills.

Great last quarter where last year we tended to fade or just hang on for the win.

One too many tallls up forward didn’t work. Other than that Longmire out coached the Demons.

Well your first line and last reinforces the fact that it does mean something it was proven it didnt work last week and again tonight for 3 quarters.

Other than the fact Brisbane are a lot more potent up forward than Melbourne.

i feel quite like after that big first round win over brisbane, the gulden/mcdonald/campbell debut game in 2021, when we got that first real hint of what this side could be
one thing we've needed since then, despite the remarkable, courageous efforts of tom hickey, is a real class ruck ...
we also needed a genuine class key defender, which mccartin has become ... and tonight melican really showed what he can contribute too
it feels to me a bit like the potential we saw in that 2021 game, and the next few games that season, and what we hoped we saw, is really taking shape ...
that was a really good win, against one of the top sides of the past few years, yet we've got so much more improvement to come
very, very exciting!

... oh, and roberts definitely looks comfortable, a pretty composed guy, looking to get involved ... very encouraging
Very happy with what he did tonight. Looked very very comfortable, and getting stuck in.

What a pleasing performance in the end - not good conditions, and we had plenty of struggles, but there is so much to take from that game. Grundy was enormous and grew into the match, Heeney an absolute jet, and Lizard being the excitement machine he is. And so many of the guys that were a bit quieter early found their way into the game and grew in influence as it progressed. Chad, Gulden, Rowy, all really came into the game. Jordan got into the contest in the second half too, which was pleasing.

The forward line is a work in progress, but we shouldn't judge it a failure after a single round.

A lot of 'experts' are saying we will miss the 8. One game doesn't make a season of course, but I reckon we will make them look like absolute fools with a decent run with injuries.

Can't ask for a much better start to the season - strap in ladies and gents, it could be a pretty good one with a bit of luck!

Where I sit is close to one of the arcs. The crowd recognised Fox's efforts. He brought a lot of ball to ground and kept it in our 50. Very loud cheers for him
