Assuming this situation happens, the Bombers trading position is much weaker than this year as JD would be out of contract. Bombers also lose their compensation pick once they match.
Failing to find a reasonable trade, he walks for nothing.
Keeping Daniher and Fantasia is a great job by Dodo.

Yes and he's out of contract at the end of next season and he won't be getting a smaller contract than he's currently on so the Bombers will have to match a bigger contract than the current one.

It can be but still requires luck. Go back every draft to 2010, and there are some handy players at 5 and 9 no doubt, with one or two recent selections that 'may' become stars, and De Goey (who is) but there's only one All Australian amongst them, and that's Stringer. It's still just a crapshoot, yet a fit and firing Daniher IS a star; an All Australian Best & Fairest winner, who is just entering the age where he should hit his prime. If he is over his injuries, he is absolutely worth 5 & 9 and more in most years. Have a look. Would you trade a fit Daniher for Polec and Prestia (2010)? Good to very good players but no. How about Buntine and Tomlinson (2011)? Err no. K Kolodjashnij and Salem (2012). Please. How about Setterfield and Brodie (2016)? Nope nope nope. The reality is Essendon have a player they know is capable of amazing things on the field, more so than most others in the league. You don't necessarily throw that away for two top 10 picks, which may just bring even good to very good players, but just like another 100 in the comp. Not unless you have earmarked potential stars you know you can get with those picks, and I am sure they have done their homework, and seen that this is very unlikely.
