Autopsy 14 point win vs GWS/Umpires

Just watched the game in full for first time.
The umpiring performance was utterly disgraceful.
That umpire in the hat that told Heeney “ don’t ever talk to me like that again” should he stood down. Arrogant combative POS. Darcy.

Full credit to the boys showing plenty of campaigner, something I feel we’ve been missing badly.
I still don’t like letting a Rolls Royce in Callaghan run around unchecked whilst prioritizing tagging halfback flankers.

April 17, 2025: Ollie Florent has been terrible and won't turn it around. He should be dropped.

May 5, 2025: Ollie Florent has turned it around, but other players will definitely NOT turn it around and should be dropped.
Oil Florent will never play of role of significance in high pressure finals football. Never has, never will.

Campaignerness, high defensive pressure, clean disposal and 4 quarters of these elements was the difference between everything we’ve done thus far this year and this game.

One more things FFS please give Sheldrick a run at it without the threat of sub.
He’s just a scape goat while other blokes continue to have shit games but get reprieve after reprieve.

Don't usually bother whinging about umpiring when we win.....but **** it was bad today, like really, really bad. It wasn't even just a few calls or mistakes here or there bad....it was completely different interpretations for the 2 teams bad. Holding the ball and high contact were completely different depending on jumper.
It was the kind of umpiring that brings out conspiracy theories. The general standard of officiating has reached diabolically bad levels though since Dillion & Kane took over, didn't think it could've gotten much worse but it has with these 2 in charge.
When was umpiring ever consistent across the board.. whats holding the ball in a tackle for one team or player becomes …no opportunity to dispose for another. Could be forgiven for assuming there is not 100% objectivity with no bias against teans or players. In the end umpires make mistakes although some do make you wonder about their sbility to be consistent and fair

Yep. Careless, high contact, the big question is impact medium or high. One week for sure but could be two. Ouch. Dumb reflex.
Clumsy and brainless … ok maybe a poor last second response mechanism but you have to think a bit quicker and know by now that a loose arm that will connect head high is to be … avoided

I think Jordan is wasted as a stopper. He’s a wonderful ball user and could be utilized in a far more damaging capacity.

Don't know if wasted , but certainly more than just a tagger

I want him to succeed so much as we have put a ton of investment into him but at the moment he has no identity.

Not a tackle/pressure player/goal scorer/disposal getter

Maybe im over the top but he is Gary Rohan without the goals
Very much a tackle/pressure player and often a handy goal scorer or setting up goals with superb ball use. There was constant pressure all game from Campbell. Using his speed to constantly frustrate GWS when they tried to launch out of defence. The cherry on the cake was the pickup and turn in traffic leading to a superb kick to clear congestion and set up the late Sheldrick goal.

Maybe not Campbell's best game but his contribution to the team is not in doubt.

  • Much better, played a great 3 quarters (apart from deplorable goal kicking). 2nd qtr was average but despite everyone always talking 4 qtr efforts, often 3 can be enough these days as long as the one you lose isn't disgraceful.
  • Only negative was Melican's silly little moment. He's easily our best defender so not only is it going to hurt losing him in the middle of an injury crisis.....we finally got a functioning and competitive forward line and now we're going to have to break that up by moving Hamling or Francis back...so the knock on of that one stupid swinging arm will hurt 2 areas of the ground.
  • Given Lloyd and Rampe plenty of whacks so have to give credit back when it's earned. Today they played how leaders should, Rampe in particular was excellent, completely shut down Toby (who's looking semi cooked himself - but don't want to take away from Rampe who was great).
  • Hamling played a good role negating Taylor. Francis & Wicks really good too. Whitfield probably got away from Jordon a little, but when we'd nearly kicked away another victory and the season with it, he stepped up bigtime in the last qtr...kicked the 2 most important goals of the game when everyone else was shitting themselves.
  • Warner and Heeney played the superstar games that probably was the difference between the 2 sides when all was said and done.
I think the Francis/Hamling v Taylor/Buckley was pivotal and telling. In the first quarter Hamling went to Taylor. After half time The Swan's were quite happy to let Taylor take Francis. GWS thought they got the match up they wanted. But they were wrong. Francis moved all the time. He kept leading up, leading back, moving all the time. If Taylor dropped off him like he wants to do Francis lead up to the ball and got it on the lead. That meant Taylor had to take Francis or risk a blowout.

He was going for the ball, you don't run in to a contest with your hands and arm down
I agree. But as much as I hate to agree with you, it was still careless.

Looking at the freeze frame of the moment of eye impact suggests it's Toby's arm that pushes Melican's arm up which turns it into a head punch. Sadly though, I think the three weeks will stick.

AFL standard:

Pies player - A stern glance
Charlie Cameron - A let-off after a nice note from his community
Any Sydney player - Instant three weeks (four with our best lawyer)

i clearly referenced the gameday thread.

Yes, but as good as the win was it just brings the overarching question of how the hell umpiring like today can still happen in a said to be professional league
Because the umpires are a rabble. They are either incompetent or corrupt. They are not professional in a professional game. They get paid badly so very open to better offers, just like the police.

So on the injury front it could be Adams, Mills and Fox back in the red and white in some capacity in the next 2-3 weeks.

Curious how Hanily was in the VFL. See he booted 3 with low disposals. How was he and the other guys that might be up for selection?
The VFL team switched off at 24 mins into Q3. I'd be reluctant to have that sort of cultural apathy creep back into our senior side.

Yep. It's more than time to give him a good run in there. Not just 1 week. Give him a really good block of 3-4 games where he gets consistent time.

I'm hopeful they bring Hanily in, push Heeney forward, Hamling back (where he belongs) and start Sheldrick in the middle.
The Bombers don't have a D50 team that will worry the guys down there and if anything on a Marvel Stadium track it will suit more speed on the ball.

How can you say that about Hambling

How can you say that about Hambling
He is much better down back IMO. Not suggesting he can't pinch hit as a forward here or there, but as a defender I have liked the way he goes about it. Isn't a leader of organising a D50 structure completely, but you can also see him making sure guys are in the right spots etc.
