Data from footywire. To check the draft order see the thread here.

Footywire says: "While we make every effort to keep up to date with player contracts, it is likely that our data may at times be out of date, incomplete or inaccurate. If you find any player contracts that need updating, please let us know using our brand new contract submission form."

Melbourne's lists following the Final 2021 List Lodgement Date comprises 36 Seniors, 6 Category A Rookies and 1 Category B Rookie.

The only spot left open is for a Category B Rookie, unless someone retires or has a season-ending injury and is placed on the inactive list. This would allow Melbourne to recruit a rookie (Cat A) during the pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP).

I know Melbourne have the best ruck in the comp .... Gawn, but hes 31 this year

He may play for a few more years no doubt

But if they lose Jackson, i just feel they will want a decent backup ruck that can be called upon ready to go if needed. They will also want to develop someone that can take over in 2024/25

Maybe many will disagree and wrong but they need a backup plan if Gawns to miss a patch of games

S.Hayes
N.Bryan
Jamieson
B.Williams

Are some vic rucks that have experience and most would be considered ready to play now

Maybe Goldstein

They definitely need a mid aged ruck but irs tough as anyone who is decent wont want to go there to play vfl behind gawn (they could play 2 rucks and one less tall forward but that would change their system). They probably end up with another older journeyman ruck instead.

Literally played 2 rucks and 2 talls for the majority of the last 2 years.

Yeah but jackson is a different type of ruck as he offers a lot at ground level. Playing a 2nd specialist ruck that isnt a great fwd (eg meek or someone of that type) would change your structure. I think its more likely you just put an older or state league ruck on the list as backup for max.

That I agree with, i think there's a chance we go with someone like Tom McDonald as a second ruck as he can get up and down the field.

If we lose Jackson I suspect we’ll pick up a Meek type player but not sure we’ll be playing Gawn and Meek type each week. But you’d wonder if Meek would look elsewhere given he won’t be playing much with Gawn there.

We definitely need tonsure up ruck stocks even if Jackson stays.

Jackson looks like he’s off. Brayshaw i’m getting worried about now too. If we lose LJ, you’d hope we would match any Brayshaw offers to at least get a pick if he insists on leaving.

This isn’t a bad shout at all. Has a year left in him at least and looks super fit. Very similar to Gawn in that he runs all day and can drop in the Fwd or Def hole when needed. Would make losing Jackson in the window a lot easier.

Be interesting to see what we do with any trade currency for Jackson and maybe Brayshaw.
I’d say we’re projecting 1.3 million plus in salary if they stay. So there’s gonna be some money. If they leave and we don’t land a player this year then we’ll be able to front end a few contracts and load up for a player next year.
