VALE Ron Barrassi

I’m not usually into ‘deifying’ Aussie football heroes - but this guy created Carlton FC as a force, saved North Melbourne FC, 6 premierships with Melbourne FC and saved the Sydney Swans FC

Even at age 80 he suffered physical injury protecting a girl from being physically abused

A true Australian legend…who’s father died in Egypt, serving his country.

RIP Ronald Dale Barrassi. Master Coach, a true Man of conviction. 829E3ACF-F58D-407E-88FE-29AD04E6A385.jpeg

Would have made a great lead in a 70s cop show too.

By age 24, Ron had played in 7 Grand Finals; 1954, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59 & 60 winning 5 of them. Easily best on ground in 2 of them 1957 & 1959.
Those two Grand Finals summed up his game. Racking up possessions and clearances as a powerful ruck rover - he would rest up forward. In 1957 he kicked 5 when up forward and in 1959 he kicked 4. Unstoppable.
That would have made him an immortal if he had retired at 24, but of course his further playing and in particular his coaching, saw him go on to win 5 more Premierships from another 9 Grand Finals.
Ron Barassi’s career almost beggars belief. 10 Premierships from 17 Grand Finals.

An absolute giant of footy. An immortal.

The Premiership Cup should be named after him.
One thing I would hate to see is the premiership cup named after a corporation such as the NFL Premiership Trophy or the Heineken Cup (something else now) in rugby union.

The best way to prevent that is to name it after a great of our game and there wouldn't be any more fitting name than the Barassi Cup.

His involvement as player or coach in ten flags is equalled only by Norm Smith and very unlikely to be matched again.

There was some good discussion around this on these boards about ten years ago.

Would love to see it happen.

Hear hear. A brilliant idea.
Start writing emails to our various clubs. Get them to petition the AFL to make it the Ron Barassi Premiership Cup.

he deserves it completely.

Please AFL, do the right thing and name the cup after him. Get it done before the Grand Final.

The Ron Barassi Cup. Should have happened years ago.
This years cup is finished. But next year should be fine.
