Autopsy 14 point win vs GWS/Umpires

Warner is a beast when he's hunting for the contested ball & putting in defensive pressure. This performance should be his normal style of play moving forwards, he far too often looks just for the outside ball or does his damage in open play. We need him hunting inside a bit more too. Loved it.
To be fair I think his defensive game has been pretty good all this year. In the early rounds it looked as though it was something he'd focused on over the preseason.

Agree on the ball hunting though. Would be great to see him add that string to his bow this year.

I hope we don't reshuffle our fwd line to replace Melican in defence. Our fwd line somehow worked together, Hamling played a great defensive role, Francis looked dangerous with his leads, Melican applied physicality while Warner & Cleary provided pressure. We need Hayward to lift & that's it'll be a good solid fwd 6 moving forward. Each player with defined roles, maybe a tad slow but if the 3 smaller players can apply pressure I think it could be successful.

Its hilarious in a way because on paper its one of the worst forward lines in the league :tearsofjoy:

Hamlimg and Francis basically tagged Taylor and Buckley. and to great success..
People think that a tag is only for the opposition best mid, but Horse started using players like Hayward and last year Jordon to tag rebounding half backs, intercepting and key defenders.
Cox was all part of this, but its something that I reckon Horse deserves credit for as he was the first coach to do it

Maybe even further back to Derricks thr ruck tagger... was that horse too?or roos

I very much believe that Dawson is a better winger than inside mid.
Also in no way was it our fault that he left.

Isn't it? we didn't try him midfield though and i don't recall us moving heaven and earth like we did for Chad , just saying . But also yes yes it doesn't matter anyway now

But anyway probably wouldn't have kept him . Just would be interesting to throw in there

Mills back will help though with a bigger body

That's the Warner we need every week, if he's going to command 1.3million he has to do it most weeks.

Very good performance across the board, though Melican is a dumb plank for that needless act which will get 3 minimum and that's if he gets ultra lucky, I'm expecting 4 weeks.

He didn't intend to do it though, I agree he's stuffed but he was going for the ball

Except for the coaches who did it before him, I mean Libba tagged Mcleod off half back in 98

Was just flat out stupid and clumsy, not intentional but he must bare the consequences of the action. Whatever it will be 4 weeks that's what I expect anyway will depend on the medical report. Hopefully Bedford is fine that's the main thing here

yep, you're right.. I could hand pick games from the 1950's too..

fact is that Horse has used the 'tag' to greater effect and with more versatility than any other coach over the last 15 years.
But sorry, I forgot that Horse was a shit coach and this board is revelling in it.

Reality is. The draw opens up now towards the Bye.
4 or 5 very winnable games.
Would be nice to be 8-5 in june.

Yep and troops back in this area too, Logan, Mills and Paps all should be back by the bye in some way shape or form.

We offered him multiple variations of contract (just like we did Chad), we offered him more money than the crows.
After his first couple of (injured) years, he eventually played more on the wing and no doubt as our midfield (which due to players like JPK had no/very limited room for players like Mills and Heeney) changed Dawson would've been rotated through it.
Swans did everything they could to keep him

Yep can't blame us while he was here, still should have had more midfield time but he wasn't getting a Lions share while those other mids were there, and it's not as if you could play JPK anywhere else. The trade for me is the issue but I'm not sure realistically we were getting more, he (and the Crows) bent us over a barrel. I just hope we get them back somewhere down the track.

I don’t think cox has got everything right , he’s probably got a lot wrong.

But with injuries and now melican out, life isn’t easy for him with the KPP department atm

He is learning whatever happens this year I'm confident both Cox and the team will imporove. Everything that could have gone wrong for a new coach has, injury draw from hell, players out of form, yet we still went close to winning a couple of those losses.

If we can break even by the bye then we are a serious chance. I back us to come home with a wet sail. Anything less than 3 wins in the next 5 will be season over. Win at least 4 of those and i'll be confident. We could realistically win all 5, then the lid is off. I don't think we will but if we somehow manage it with this injury list then that would be impressive.

One of the most pleasing aspects yesterday (compared to past weeks) was the composure, intent and defensive pressure of the forward 6.

The ball has pinged way too easily out of there in recent weeks.

Agree, that was the number 1 improvent, everything else flowed, but the defensive pressure was up 100% from the week before I don't have the stats but that's just going off the eye test and that's usually what I do. The defensive pressure has been non existant all year till this game and no I'm not counting the North training drill

We need to jag this week badly, that's the one. It's the one before Mills is likely available for selection in some form (probably VFL first)

Looking at Essendon, they're much like us in the sense that they're either on or not. There's no inbetween. The team that wins will win big i think.
