I hope Chad makes us look stupid for pushing him out. Love the guy. Considering how Hawks supporters and the general AFL public view Shaun, then there will be a bronze statue of Chad outside Waverley in 20 years time if Clarkson can get the best out of him

Fascinating trade by Hawthorn here. They seem to have loaded up for one more crack at a flag.

I don't think they'll make the eight next year. They had a very soft draw this year and an extraordinary run with injuries considering the age profile of the list. The only players of note that missed more than 3 games were Sicily and Burgoyne. (and Cyril).

Next year they'll have to play 10 games against WC / Rich / Coll / GWS / Melbourne which will really test them, they are going to have to win 4 of those to be a shot at making finals.

Wingard makes them an awfully efficient machine up forward which has been the recipe for success under Clarkson. Wingard, Roughead, Puopolo, Breust and Gunston are all ruthless in front of the sticks and will be a tough matchup. They get goals from Smith and O'Meara too.

But if not 2019 then what? By this time next year 18 players on their list will be over 28. It would be a confident supporter to suggest that they're not going to find themselves in an awfully deep hole.
You also missed the injury to McEvoy, but anyway....

Only on Bigfooty do players fall off a cliff at 29 years of age.

Kudos. That is a tough thing to write less than an our after a trade goes through.

Hope you're right.

Would have got him for free next year though & used what you gave up to target another top line player.
Good player but Hawks were impatient.
Wouldn’t have gotten him for the same contracted price though, which is why it was good to get it done this year on our terms, rather than the FA market’s.
Means Hawks can go again next year during FA/trade period with even more cap space - once Birchall, Rough and Burgoyne are off the books.

Salary cap space is far more critical to ongoing list management than a few picks after 35.

It's not a cliff, it's a ceiling. Nobody improves after about 27-28. The majority of players begin to decline. It might be a 1-2% decline but when you add that to the 1-2% improvement that other clubs get from their youngsters you can go backwards quickly.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha

Count something that matters.

Like the days until you’re relocated.
I wouldn't crow too early now you've lost your Tassie money.

From Wikipedia.

North merged with fellow VFA football club West Melbourne in 1907, which at the time had lost its home ground. The joint venture saw a chance of promotion, and the club applied for admission to the more prestigious VFL in 1908, but Richmond and University were admitted instead. North was kicked out of the VFA during the 1907/08 offseason as a result of applying to join the VFL

You’re not playing with a full deck, are you?

Think it's a pretty harsh message to Chad...wait a year...as long as you don't do a knee or anything else, we will be waiting.

We committed to him and we paid a steep price, but that's life.

Port just pushed out a fantastic player who has even more potential to get better.
What are they doing, they need to sort out their rubbish trading.

Well done Hawks.

Very happy with our core group of guys 28 and under now

Mitchell, omeara, wingard, Scully,Sicily, bruest, gunston, hardwick will keep us challenging for the next 4 years. What the list looks like after that who knows , but I'd say if you fielded a team 4 years from now every team would look very average on paper.

head scratcher for Port. Potentially underselling Burton though who many Hawks supporters seem to rate quite highly. Maybe as some have suggested Port think Wingard is on his way down.

Genuinely curious. Do you have all of those locked in for the next 4 years? At some point there'll be a cap squeeze because Sicily is going to demand a big pay day given his trajectory as will Mitchell.
