What a piece of s**t reporting. “All time trade blunder”
It’s a pick that won’t be used anyway. And what’s the difference between Essendon knocking it back and Hawthorn offering it. Clearly neither knew the rules.

But there is a potential reason that Hawthorn made the offer - to avoid him becoming a FA for life.

What were the reasons for Essendon to decline the offer?

Also if the trade goes through now, he becomes a Hawthorn player now. Otherwise has to wait until the end of October to be delisted, and then wait for the delisted free agent signing period.

So we are giving up BZT and D'Ambrosio for Duursma.
No way.
We're losing Mass for nothing. 63 would be irrelevant to us but worth something to Port.

Oh OK let's give him away for nothing. Cool.
Too old and can't kick anyway.
... Like we're doing anyway? Like the Hawks won't offer more than that (fair enough) and therefore he'll become a DFA and we lose him for nothing.

So we are giving up both BZT and D'Ambrosio for Duursma.

Duursma was a first rounder and has potential to be a star.

BZT won the reverse coleman and Massimo is a mid-season draft player who'll likely spend 80% of 2024 at Box Hill.

On what planet is that a bad outcome for Essendon?

Duursma is fringe 22 at a team that went out in straight sets, and got shown up as soft in two finals.

Zerk-Thatcher is a best 22 key defender that Port offered a four year deal to.

Now it's a meaningless pick for Mass but Zerk is definitely equal to Duursma in terms of value purely due to contract status.

Duursma had one good year.
And he's been a B grade wingman the rest of the time. Turns it over too much for mine.

BZT was played out of position at fullback.
He will be very valuable as a 2nd or 3rd tall.

Massimo is 21 and has a big upside and big weapon left boot.

Zerk-Thatcher alone is worth more than Duursma.

Being best 22 in a mediocre Essendon side is hardly something to hang your hat on.

You also call Duursma fringe but he played every game when he wasn't injured so that's an interesting take on fringe.

As for Massimo, he may he decent, who knows. If his kicking is his biggest weapon he might fit in but he'll be about 5th in line for distributing off half back as our backline is stacked with elite kicks (Sicily, Scrimshaw and Hardwick all elite distributors).
