A few new faces and a few older guys returning home after some time away, but I dont know about taking the piss. Plenty of work to be done. A lot of good quality sides in D2 and will be interesting to see how we handle the jump up a grade.Serious recruiting drive. Plenty of guys who will take the piss at this level

While most VAFA attention has been centred on the recruiting arms race in the Premier ranks, with a staggering number of former-AFL recruits drawn to the Ammos this year, Aquinas Old Collegians has been quietly going about its business prior to stepping up to Division 2.
The Bloods, after winning two premierships in the past three years, have signed an impressive list of recruits — most of whom are former students of the school or have returned to the VAFA club after time away to test themselves at a higher level.
At the head of the list is “favourite son” Matt Aver, who returns to Great Ryrie St after nine years with Norwood in the EFL. During his time with the Norsemen he was a member of the club’s breakthrough premiership win, an Eastern league team of the year selection, an EFL interleague rep, a Vic Metro rep and one of the most respected players in the competition.
Michael Barnes is a former Aquinas student who’s back after a career that included the Eastern Ranges and VFL footy with Box Hill.
Alex Guthrie, the Bloods’ premiership full back in 2017, is back after time overseas while Michael Connolly brings three years of EFL experience with East Ringwood back to the club.
Scott Dowsing has also joined after four years with Glen Eira.
And in another link to the school, the Bloods have signed skilful on-baller Darcy Taylor from Horsham Demons. The 27-year-old has played in four senior premierships at Horsham and represented the Wimmera league on a number of occasions. He recently moved to Melbourne to start teaching at Aquinas College.
Aquinas coach Ash Naulty said having players the calibre of Aver and Barnes had brought a wealth of experience to the club.
“We’re absolutely stoked to have him (Aver), he’s a favourite son,” he said. “We’ve been nagging him for a few years.
“(Barnes) has been fantastic on the training track, he’s really committed to the group.
“A lot of the work ethic has changed (with the experienced personnel on the track). And we’ve gone back to making things really enjoyable at training.”
But beyond the raft of signings, Naulty said the club would be looking to the continuing development shown by the Bloods’ younger brigade.
With strong links forged with the school, and outstanding work done by coach Craig Glennie in building an under-19 flag-winning side, Aquinas has some 14 or 15 youngsters stepping up to senior football this season.
“The VAFA has changed a lot,” Naulty said. “It’s a different mindset now, clubs are really investing in their juniors.”
Naulty said the club would not be dwelling on its recent flag success, instead turning its attention to the challenge ahead.
“We’ve always been quite humble about how we go about things,” he said. “When you go up a grade, the guys are just wanting that challenge.
“Without giving too much away, there’ll be a change of the guard and we have to look at our game plan.”
Aquinas has a couple of pre-season hitouts against higher-graded opponents before taking the field for the Division 2 season-opener against Yarra Old Grammarians at Aquinas College on Saturday, April 4.
