In this context I’m talking about having a midfield that is capable of winning a flag.

A necessary but not sufficient condition.

Thats probably achievable. Much like we are now. A side that makes finals is theoretically capable of winning a flag.

Not putting an actual definitive target is probably ideal for the club. It lets all have their own version of success.

800 for a player, Im sure there are lots of players that would gladly come for 800. What age and quality they are is probably another consideration.

Personally , I dont see us winning another flag once selwood go's till we refresh with better talent thru the draft. If we can find a to do that it will be quite a shock to the afls socialism.

Would love the club to look at local St Mary's GFL best and fairest winner Harry Benson.

22 year old midfielder who played in the Falcons premiership a few years ago and has dominated in a very competitive competition.

Apparently had knocked back advances from the club in recent years to be part of the VFL squad but has absolutely gone to a new level this year.

Why? With our history of drafting from within, surely it's a thin end of a wedge for him.

I wonder now if Higgins retires at the end of the year. If he didn’t get in for this weeks game given the injuries it’s going to be a long year of twos footy next year.

He is absolutely a shadow of the player he was at North. Dramatically. Don’t really care that it cost us pick 36 or whatever (Lazzaro from memory) but if he was at least on a par to his Nth days he could have been the difference on Friday. Small margins these finals.

I also remember Isaac Smith turned down 3 years at Melb over our two years bc we were “contending”. That could likewise ironically be the difference between who plays in the Grand Final.

Probably is the reason they have the room for Cerra.

We have been shocking their socialisation for 20 years look at our record of making prelims no other side comes close. I think we can buck the system again.

Are there any big-name mids who will be coming out of contract in 2023 (assuming Selwood retires around that time and we do indeed pursue a recruit as has been speculated)?

Jacob Hopper is a RFA in 2023

Fyfe, Parish, Oliver, Yeo, Liberatore.

Not saying they are necessarily gettable, just that they qualify.

Parish.

Not really. 10 years I will give you.

before that we built thru the system that the afl instigated with some early picks plus a tad of additional help with FSons.

Post 2011 , the teams we won against have all flaked it, and we have persisted.. but soon Selwood and Hawkins will be gone and we truely will have no player left that we drafted ... that could have been considered top10.

We can add another gun player, if we are really lucky we add someone who gives us as much as Danger. How we add then is another debate. We will do as we normally do, so we will have some good players ... but will they good enough to win? I dont think so. Id be happy to be wrong, but I think we will need a period where we add top10 players thru the draft. History says clubs have multiple top10 players they have drafted. Almost no one has won without that stat in the last 20 years. Maybe Sydney? Of the four side left this year we have the least top picks we drafted. We have done a top job with what we have had. To keep beating the system not only needs us to be good, but in needs the other clubs to waste chances.

And iv said it all year.... My biggest concern is our age profile of our midfield group.... With having no Constable and Narkle next year, our midfield group is all going to be 29 plus except for Parfitt... Its major concern

If you ignored contracts you’d let Henderson, Rohan, Higgins, Selwood, Dahlhaus and Scott go now. But we obviously won’t. It’s a massive lose tonight. And it can’t be ignored but our list is set up to go again next year without much room for change.

I still wouldn’t let Selwood go.
Problem is no one ever helps him, he needs to be our 4th mid we depend on.
Not the 1st/2nd

This should be the straw and the camel moment.... what will be hard to admit is we have several mature players tied up for another 12 months. Is this 2010? Is our list profile the same?
Surely this is a no excuses moment and its time to start to turn the list, and that means certain players who are still very good do not get played, and lesser younger ones do get played to build experience.

I share your concern about the age of the midfield but looking at Narkle and Constable as the solution is clutching at straws. They're not the answer

Geelong VFL fastest and highest skilled 20yo is Consigned to GFL because of all the slow old list cloggers like Jenkins Leaving only 4-5 spots each week. How can Geelong develop and draft young kids under their watch when they canot play them.? Okanboh, Tehenay, Brownless, etc etc all list cloggers who are guaranteed games every week even if they get 6 touches. The main one JENKINS

Unlike your state, we have hardly played vfl footy for 2 seasons.
Haven’t seen you around these traps before, we must’ve lost.
I’m sure your in depth analysis of our list is really relevant and we will all dive into it with you.

A west coast supporter would have a lot of knowledge about supporting an old washed up team.
