I've been thinking for a long time about starting this thread.
A thread dedicated to the list, philosophical inquiry, structures, sets and patterns and analysis of everything related to list management including balance, depth and identification of roles.
All in one thread.
More a focus on what we have as opposed to who we have and what we need as opposed to what we want.
If that makes sense.
Many of our supporters are hitting panic stations but we are only just entering our premiership window.
Here is why in my opinion.
I view a list as A+--A--B+--B--C+ and unproven
A+ AFL HOFer
A AA quality/borderline HOF/club HOF
B+ borderline AA/ guaranteed 22
B worthy of 22
C+ borderline 22, role players or blooded prospects
Unproven- prospects
There are no C grade AFL players, they are all worthy of a spot on their list for one reason or another and most would kill at country.
The wheat is separated from the Chaff quickly.
We need around 8 AA caliber players.
We need the right mix of 200+ gamers, 100-200 gamers and 50-100 gamers.
We need guys in the 20-23 range who have 50-100 games who fulfil a role and are worthy of the 22.
And the 24-30 age bracket is the most important, if your 22 doesn't have 12+ of these guys you cannot win the premiership.
You are either too old or too young.
A+ Dangerfield, J.Selwood
A Hawkins, Duncan, Taylor, Henderson, Tuohy, S.Selwood
B+ Blicavs, Motlop, Menzel, Cockatoo
B Smith, Bews, Stewart, Kolodjashnij, C. Guthrie, Parfitt, Thurlow, Murdoch
C+ Lang, Buzza, Parsons
And anyone I'm forgetting off the top of my head.
Obviously people will scoff at Henderson, Hawkins, Taylor and S.Selwood as A graders but they are all worthy of AA at this point in time.
Hawkins biggest problem is he can't play the role of hit up target out of the back line and kick bags one out from the square.
If he plays FF at this point, the ball either doesn't get there or is not clean and precise.
This is a structural problem and not a Tom Hawkins problem and unfortunately structurally it is Tom Hawkins problem.
(Example of this thread)
A lead up forward with great skills, a good tank and KPF would probably lead to Tom kicking 60 next year.
If only a guy like Jack Watts was available...(what are our supporters laughing at?)
J.Selwood, Dangerfield, Hawkins, S.Selwood and Blicavs have all won AFL B&F with different clubs and not one is past their used by date and all fit the Premiership profile.
Duncan, Taylor and Henderson are all underrated and best 22 players at every single club in the league.
We have a list primed to win it all and we are still rebuilding.
This Club is that brilliant that it continually goes to show that genius reveals itself in time.
What say you fellow Cat fans?
