I've been thinking for a long time about starting this thread.

A thread dedicated to the list, philosophical inquiry, structures, sets and patterns and analysis of everything related to list management including balance, depth and identification of roles.

All in one thread.

More a focus on what we have as opposed to who we have and what we need as opposed to what we want.

If that makes sense.

Many of our supporters are hitting panic stations but we are only just entering our premiership window.

Here is why in my opinion.

I view a list as A+--A--B+--B--C+ and unproven

A+ AFL HOFer

A AA quality/borderline HOF/club HOF

B+ borderline AA/ guaranteed 22

B worthy of 22

C+ borderline 22, role players or blooded prospects

Unproven- prospects

There are no C grade AFL players, they are all worthy of a spot on their list for one reason or another and most would kill at country.

The wheat is separated from the Chaff quickly.

We need around 8 AA caliber players.

We need the right mix of 200+ gamers, 100-200 gamers and 50-100 gamers.

We need guys in the 20-23 range who have 50-100 games who fulfil a role and are worthy of the 22.

And the 24-30 age bracket is the most important, if your 22 doesn't have 12+ of these guys you cannot win the premiership.

You are either too old or too young.

A+ Dangerfield, J.Selwood

A Hawkins, Duncan, Taylor, Henderson, Tuohy, S.Selwood

B+ Blicavs, Motlop, Menzel, Cockatoo

B Smith, Bews, Stewart, Kolodjashnij, C. Guthrie, Parfitt, Thurlow, Murdoch

C+ Lang, Buzza, Parsons

And anyone I'm forgetting off the top of my head.

Obviously people will scoff at Henderson, Hawkins, Taylor and S.Selwood as A graders but they are all worthy of AA at this point in time.

Hawkins biggest problem is he can't play the role of hit up target out of the back line and kick bags one out from the square.

If he plays FF at this point, the ball either doesn't get there or is not clean and precise.

This is a structural problem and not a Tom Hawkins problem and unfortunately structurally it is Tom Hawkins problem.

(Example of this thread)

A lead up forward with great skills, a good tank and KPF would probably lead to Tom kicking 60 next year.

If only a guy like Jack Watts was available...(what are our supporters laughing at?)

J.Selwood, Dangerfield, Hawkins, S.Selwood and Blicavs have all won AFL B&F with different clubs and not one is past their used by date and all fit the Premiership profile.

Duncan, Taylor and Henderson are all underrated and best 22 players at every single club in the league.

We have a list primed to win it all and we are still rebuilding.

This Club is that brilliant that it continually goes to show that genius reveals itself in time.

What say you fellow Cat fans?

I say prepare yourself for a lot of flak from the glass half empty brigade.....I also say, don't be deterred. :thumbsu:

Dangerfield and J Selwood are A+ every day of the week.

Duncan is a B+ based on this season

The rest are B graders or below

Duncan is AA quality every day of the week.

Taylor in the backline is also AA worthy.

Selwood is extremely underrated and is A grade at his role as defensive inside mid/tagger

Obviously winning the flag is extremely complex but this thread has to start somewhere!

I agree with you 100%. Our list wasn't ready to win a flag this year or last. 2018/19 are our years.
We are not going to have a long window but I think we will be in the best list bracket 2018/2019/2020.

If we get Ablett and Watts we'll be a mighty chance to win it all next year.

If we get Stringer and Ablett pencil us in and if we get Stringer, Ablett and Watts we will win at least 2 IMO.

We aren't just close to winning it all, we're primed and ready to win it all.

I've been going on about it on the Scott thread for weeks. Next year is the year our list enters the most important zone any list has to have to win a flag. A group of 10-12 guys who've played 80-100 games together. That doesn't mean we'll hit the ground running, but I expect us to be right in the hunt come finals time, and to give a far better account of ourselves in those finals.

At this point he is zero from 3, hardly a strong case.

He has been borderline AA in 1 of his 7 seasons, hardly a compelling arguement to call him an A grader.
He is an A grader.

AA quality- tick
AFL HOF- no
Club HOF- very well could be

I agree with your analysis!

Feel free to put all your thoughts into this thread!

That is why it exists!

Awesome point about 80-100 games together, belongs in the OP.

I think you have massively overrated the quality of our list there. S.Selwood an A-grader is laughable. That's just for starters.
S.Selwood is an A grader IMO.

One of the best defensive midfield players in the league.

He is an A grader in that role.

Elite defensive mid is...elite

I did not state they have to be AA!

I stated they have to AA quality.

Duncan is an A grader.

Plain as day.

He obviously is below (ever so slightly) AA quality as he has never made it. Borderline AA he is until he makes it which equals B+.

And dont even start me on Blicavs B+ and Kolo a B.

Start right on!

Blicavs is a guy I don't rate but he's more than a B and less than an A.

Kolodjashnij is underrated.

Kolodjashnij is underrated.

Blicavs borderline AA, you must be joking. Wouldn't get in an AA squad of 150.

Kolo i reckon is a dead set spud. The only thing he has got going for him is that when he runs out he looks like a footballer. Then the game starts and he has no idea.

He's guaranteed 22 at a team that has finished as a finalist in every year of his career bar one.

B+
