Apparently had a medical at the Swans.

Straight swap for Newman most likely at this stage and comes out of contract this year after North asked him to explore his options.

SYDNEY is eyeing a trade for North Melbourne midfielder Ryan Clarke after touring the young Roo through its facilities this week.

AFL.com.au understands Clarke is investigating his options and the potential of a move to the Swans, with the 21-year-old's contract at Arden Street set to expire on October 31.

Clarke is yet to renew his current deal at North Melbourne after penning a one-year extension to his initial contract during his first pre-season with the club in February 2016.

He has since played 40 games for the Kangaroos, including 19 this season.

As Clarke is not a free agent, any move for the youngster will have to be concluded via a trade. Sydney is currently in possession of one first-round pick and two second-round picks, as well as a fourth-round and a fifth-round selection ahead of November's NAB AFL Draft.

It could also leverage North Melbourne's interest in Nic Newman in any negotiations, with the Kangaroos meeting with the uncontracted defender earlier in the month.

Sydney is likely to try and bolster its midfield stocks during next October's NAB AFL Trade Period, with experienced onballer Dan Hannebery already requesting a trade to St Kilda.

North Melbourne is also set for a significant off-season, having already met with Port Adelaide wingman Jared Polec and Gold Coast midfielder Aaron Hall, as well as Newman.

West Coast's star free agent Andrew Gaff has also been strongly linked with a potential move to Arden Street.

Is this the guy that North supporters talked up as being the next Dane Swan after he had 100 touches over his first 3 games?

Pretty mediocre young player. Doubt he'll develop into anything special. Straight swap for Newman seems fair.
70 touches and it was more a comparison to Ben Cousins - Similar running styles and aerobic capacity.

so he was playing as a midfielder and then you moved him into defence?

how come he got 19 games this season. every time i saw him play he looked slow and butchered the pill.

He got an opportunity due to injuries but got pushed out with players like Jed and Ahern pushing through and Jacobs returning (for part of the season). Dumont had a good end to the season and LDU has a higher ceiling so I guess the club would prefer to recoup the pick they used for him.

He was placed in the back line because North lack small defenders and in an effort to improve the defensive side of his game.
How quickly the optimism faded.
Not sure the optimism faded. He was ear-marked as a winger but with Polec coming in and most likely Gaff it's not hard to see why he's been told to explore his options.

21yo plays 19 games and gets told to explore his options? WTF?

He won't be getting a game if Polec/Gaff/Hall all lob, and with Will Walker & Tom Murphy coming on.
