Can someone explain why we’re not hearing anything about Warner having his head taken off just before he kicked it over the line?

Because that would open pandora's box. If the media pointed out any more non-frees, they'd have to talk about why Lloyd was pinged for holding the man when the player had already dropped the ball illegally, resulting in a goal to Richmond. Or why Gulden tackles a Richmond player who drops the ball and it's play on, but then Gulden is tackled by a Richmond player and it's holding the ball for a shot on goal for Richmond.

I don't know why the media do it. It's such a slippery slope to single out dubious umpiring decisions because it implies that those decisions alone are the only ones that have any bearing on the result. Like before that lone decision, there weren't 120 minutes of ******* putrid decisions - both ways - that shaped the game in some way.

In short: the media need to just STFU.

I mentioned this on the main board.
Along with a request that the Richmond FC start packaging their salt as my pool could desperately use some of it.

Yep, these are the two exact incidents I pointed out to a Richmond supporting friend who decided to bombard me with constant texts for two hours after the game ended, telling me how we are "protected".
There were a dozen plus dreadful calls throughout the game both ways, truth be told they were six goals up and should never have given us a sniff.

I never went to the footy to watch the Umps. I do not flick on the telly to watch the little folk in green/yellow.

The centrality of umpiring is a pox on the game.

Spot on, couldn't have put it any more succinctly Unc.

I actually thought, as boring as it might've been, that Campbell's was the goal of the game for us. Just something epic about roosting a set-shot from 50m out at a critical stage of the match (our first goal in nearly 40 minutes and the one that, as it turned out, prevented Richmond's lead from becoming insurmountable.)

yeah ... my richmond diehard mate in melbourne texted saturday about the "cheating umps", but he only makes those comments tongue in cheek
my response was that the tigers gave up a five-goal-plus lead and he agreed that was the story of the game
as is pretty much usual, i didn't get to see the game in full, but saw most of the last term and i thought we got a couple of iffy calls but when the final count is 30-30 you know there's been too much whistle ...
and then you think back over game after game of copping terrible calls and, well, we'll take this one
as for that last schemozzle over prestia, spare me! he was lucky to get a free kick at all, and the crap some of the richmond players went on with was just childish (surly jack riewoldt leading the way) ... grimes can take a bow for his actions, and i think martin was all but taking the piss first suggesting it should have been a 50-metre, i think he pulled his head in as it all kicked off after
but there's no doubt the worst of it came from brian taylor and then carried on a bit too much by garry lyon in the post-game

They actually mentioned the high on Warner on First Crack which came before the holding, so they are opening their eyes a bit more to our side of things these days. Actually find First Crack one of the better footy shows at the moment, feels a lot more balanced.

Which crew and timeslot is First Crack again?

It's on after Bounce. Huddo, King and Montagna most of the time. Find Montagna generally the best of the three but it's usually a reasonable discussion and early enough in the week not to have been affected by other media hype.

I generally find Montanga an absolutely pain funnily enough.
King I don't mind, and Huddo is nice.

Still can't believe that Liam Baker hasn't had any kudos

Nice to come here to a friendlier board after a couple of close wins against an in-form side, in both the AFL and the VFL.

I thought it was a risky call by Horse to play Roberts, who struggled with the pace. I almost hoped he'd get a small injury so Fox (sub) could come in to do the role Mills was doing in defence. Mills just keeps on impressing.Roberts will at least have the experience and know what it takes to play seniors.

I loved Hayward's pressure early. If he can maintain it for the whole game I'd offer to change my name to Loretta and have his babies - of course they'll have to gestate in a box. He can be a little over-zealous but he has genuine speed and he uses it. I wish Papley was attacking the ball and the man as hard. Papley showed some glimpses but he's a shadow of his 2021 self.

O'Riordan looked OK. He can clearly play at this level but even at his best he can still look panicked under pressure.

Reid was very good early, switched on while Bud was still charging his batteries. His second efforts and small clever acts really stand out. I think he could cement a spot if he can maintain that for whole games.

I loved the work of Warner but he's missing the goals he used to kick from 50m out and he needs to be smarter in defence. We really need to kick straighter. Even our reserves are missing many gettable shots.

I know his kicking is great for penetrating defensive walls but I can't help thinking Campbell should be playing at least some midfield time. He reminds me of the great Stuey Maxwell. He's got the speed and the kick. I'd like to see his left foot banging through long goals on the run. That kick from 55 sailed through half way up the post.

The controversy is a media beat up. Warner nearly had his head ripped off and he clearly didn't hear the whistle. The crowd noise at that point was deafening. Even if the free was there, by the rules the umpire should have reversed it and paid two or three fifties for the level of aggressiove dissent coming from the Richmond players. Jack was right in his face spitting vitriol.

Good to see us switched on in Q1 but we then switched off in Q2. Do that against Melbourne and it's all over.

I loved the Kings 1 liners

Really interesting coaches votes:
Franklin 5 4
Warner 1 5
Ladhams 4 0
Mills 3 0
Nankervis 0 3
Cotchin 0 2
Parker 2 0
Grimes 0 1
Guessing Horse on the left.
Mills/Nankervis and Cotchin/Parker could be the other way around.
The coaches saw it very differently to each other!

The media, BT in particular, are a main cause of the umpiring uproar, he was at it again in the dying minute of Carl v Coll calling for a high tackle that wasn’t paid. Taylor could have lessened the hysteria Friday by saying the umps make callers like that every game…. Not to mention the free is not for kicking the ball into the crowd, it’s for time wasting, with the siren gone, it’s difficult to support time wasting.

I'm not really gonna blame BT or any commentators for getting frenzied over the umpires literally having a potentially game-changing exchange after the siren. By any measure it's a dramatic situation, and I don't think he was necessarily pulling for it to be a 50m against us but simply emphasising the rules to clarify why the exchange was even happening.

However the case should've been closed once the umpires made their decision, Prestia had his kick, and we were declared the winners. Everything since has been media hyperbole for clicks and shame on all of them. They are the ones who spend hours upon hours talking about the state of the game, and then both teams dish up one of the best games of the year, and they choose to indulge in the dramatics rather than the footy played.

Just goes to show where their priorities really are.

(And yes, BT was shocking all night in terms of being unable to hide his bias towards Richmond. I am a fan of his but he irks me in Swans games because he seems to have a real disdain for us.)

I think they were indulging in hysterics more so than dramatics. He mentioned the rule about kicking the ball into the crowd not time wasting , needed to put those two together to be even a smaller bit accurate, given it is his profession after all. It’s not about being agains5 us, it’s about being accurate, I think he could have been better.

The amount of fixation on kicking the ball into the crowd as opposed to just kicking the ball away (particularly from that Has The Umpire Got It Wrong twitter account) is just bizarre to me as it strips the moment of its context - a closely fought win after the siren has gone. Who wouldn't kick the ball away in celebration? Why does that particular action inform the penalty any more than just chipping it to a team mate as someone would do if they'd just won by 40 points?
