Review Pies 82 def Dogs 73

Endeavour was there. The closeness of the scores due to junk time goals ,is not a true reflection of where we are at.
And that is a dysfunctional forward line that can't take a mark more often than not at HF.
A full back turned into a FF that isn't being taught intictive leading.(In that case put him back in the backline)It will end up like Boyd....
Players too scared to take shots when we finally find space.
And players continually missing easy shots.
3 years now
Forward line and linkage needs a total review.IMO

Gets caught out of position far too much with that deep high ball does Cordy. It’s like he’s always that half kick off effecting the zone anyway and with that, too far away to at least set himself going back.

Move him up a little higher or just keep it a bit more simple for him, ie just go out and try beat your opponent.

Cordy just can't judge the flight of the ball to save his life. I've been saying it ever since our 2016 finals run when Cordy(CHF) gave up 11 marks (10 intercepts) to Nick Haynes in the prelim and 9 marks (12 intercepts) vs Grundy in the GF. Although most were put down as contested marks in reality they were freebies because Cordy constantly misjudged the flight of the ball every time we bombed it in.

And it's been the same story since he's been moved down back. In fact it's been magnified since our defence requires us to play in front most of the time, so judging the flight of the ball correctly is as important than ever.

I wouldn't be surprised if he has some depth perception eyesight problems tbh.

Lot of angry post siren comments on the game thread and fair enough. Emotional game. And frustrating to miss a lot of easy shots

But

Collingwood are second on the ladder and we could have won.

Both times we’ve played them Brodie Grundy has singlehandedly won the game for them. We have more than matched them around the ground away from Ruck contests.

We had 3 quarters of football in which we were just the better team and were beaten in one by 16, not a massive gap but enough to lose.

When Tim English learns how to ruck, our elite centre square midfield who managed in both games against the Pies to get plenty of clearances despite Grundy’s dominance, will be hard to beat.

That midfield today had 5 players ( plus Daniel up back ) with 30+ possessions. That included 20 yo Lipinski who has now performed at that level last two games. All 6 of them are under 25 yo, much younger than Collingwood’s best.

Yes we have some major deficiencies both up back and forward. Our backs are undersized and we have a forward who trained as the backman we need but is now learning to be the forward we need and don’t know how to use. That gun midfield above still makes bad decisions when delivering it and we can’t find anyone who WANTS to kick a goal but this side is not ******, ******, or ******. It’s just not winning. It’s frustrating but I see more good than bad. It’s just the bad is standing out at the wrong time.

That kick to a forward running backwards towards goal frustrates the hell out of me. It never makes it, usually ending up with a mark to the defender. Our forwards need to run towards the ball carrier. Who coaches these guys?

While the seasons been alive, Beveridge has played:

Hayes
Gowers
Lachie young
Roarke smith
Ryan Gardner
Bailey dale

These guys have played VFL (or been omitted):

Pat lipinski
Josh Schache
Jackson Trengove
Toby McLean
Ed Richards

I love beveridge. He’s a special, special coach. But his selections in 2019 have been a complete debacle. Very hard to win when we’re on a knife’s edge as is.

Great effort but it was unfortunately really predictable. Lose too many easy one on ones down back. Miss too many shots up forward.

IMO the missed shots are due to non forwards taking them. I.e suckling and R Smith. Also pretty annoyed with Naughton’s set shots, they seem to be going backwards.

Great game Schache.

The mids must be getting really annoyed with the forwards

Bevo: "We are making progress we just need to maintain that over four quarters of footy the intent is there"
Lock that in

Can’t fault the effort of the boys. Can’t be too harsh on them.

Still ruck issues. Defending is an issue, carrying Far too many spuds.

Need more forwards. Simple Play specialist goal kickers and they’ll kick those goals for you.

Schache deserved to be dropped. But Gardner got a call up after doing very little in the VFL the preceding weeks. Then proceeded to do even less at AFL level.

You're correct on all three counts. However, at the time of Gardners weird selection the mc had clearly decided that they needed a presence up forward (such as it was) and were not willing to reward Schache with promotion until his efforts warranted it and other than Lew Young the cupboard had nothing but the memory of Tom Boyd left in it. After today, I think an argument can be made that their timing was correct and that should he continue to bring the same level of effort to his game plus a few handy goals he will remain in the side. If he doesn't he should be sent back down like any other developing player on the list to work on . The same goes for Ed Richards in my view.

Bulldogs by 25 Points.

6 x Players 30 possessions or over.

If Grundy wins the Brownlow thank English before his parents.

We need the AFL to change the rules so scoring is not the way to win the game.

End the Naughton experiment, I know a bloke from McDonalds he will do makes a
great burger.

Luke Beveridge only record one press conference and play it every week because i
do not get how we can perform better to win, maybe Macrae needs 50 possessions.

We are still fielding the youngest side in the league and we just lost to a Top 4 side by 9 points so there’s lots to be positive about.

Our kicking for goal was terrible (nothing new there) and also some of our entries into the forward 50 (especially in the second half) weren’t good enough.

Basically today showed what we already know, that we’re a talented side that isn’t quite there yet.

It’s frustrating, but there’s been far worse times on field than this, just got to be patient.

I walked out disappointed we lost but really excited about where we are heading. We kick straight we win (as always) but we never gave up and blokes who got dropped came back with some desire.

Schache needs to stay in the 1s hes a natural forward and converts. He had an effort in the first quarter when he halved a contest and we ended up getting a goal out of it. Gardner wouldn't have made half the impact he did today. Richards was great and looked hungry and less fumble. This team in 2 years with more footy into timmy and Aaron and a few FAs will be very good. Think we are going places and us supporters need to be patient and we will reap the rewards

Three bad things:
  • Missing easy set shots
  • Allowing Collingwood to break tackles that should have stuck
  • Not keeping our feet in the contest
Three good things
  • Great pressure and intensity throughout - we have to bring that every single week
  • Some exciting fast movement of the ball - who cares if the top sides don't do it? It may be the point of difference we need.
  • Three players returning from enforced stints in the VFL have come back as better players - Lipinski, Richards, Schache. Still works in progress but the signs are better. McLean may well be a better player than a few in today's side but MC might just be sending him a message.

Anyone who says our list is **** has absolutely no idea, we won three quarters against a top 4 team and should’ve one. We lost it from the following...

25 shots to 18
58 I50s to 43
Kicked 11 BEHINDS to 3

I’ve been saying it all year. Goal accuracy is our biggest problem.
We managed to win the inside 50 count despite being smashed in centre clearances as one oft he youngest lists in the competition.

We're experience + a genuine medium forward away from being a finals side.
I really hope we have a succession plan for Lloyd & Brick as both were good for us tonight.
