Round 15: Changes vs Carlton + Pre-match Discussion

He ranks elite for intercept marks and hasn’t been out stretched once this year so to say a fwd line that has kicked 100 pts twice in a couple years(3rd worst attack) is going to stretch (3rd best defence) hamling(one of the best one on one defenders) Ryan and logue ( pure athlete warming up nicely)
Is a bit of a stretch
tbh the mans right. Curnow, Mckay and Mcgovern would stretch us - size wise, which I assume is what he meant. To say they'd beat us, you'd have an argument, but to stretch us - he's 100% correct. The AP -> Logue does make us a lot shorter and Mckay is a huge unit. Hamling/Logue would both be 'stretched' to match him.

Wondering if it’s not just Optus

I don't think it is, obviously load management is huge for injuries but all our foot injuries have been after or during games over East.

Taberner after Essendon at Marvel.
Pearce and Lobb during/after Collingwood at the MCG.
Hogan during Melbourne at the MCG.

In a sense yes.

Freo as a unit with Ryan intercepting etc is another thing for Carlton to overcome, but they are still 3 big key forwards capable of taking big grabs that would 'stretch' most defences and worry defenders. McKay would be a handful for Hamling even if Hamling does well, he'd take his full attention...but now he doesn't have McKay to worry about and can help negate Curnow for example. Curnow on Logue 1v1 would be a bit of a concern for Freo's coaching box when planning this game.

Bottom line is McKay out certainly helps Freo's chances.

Logue would be a reasonable match up on Curnow, athletically and strengthwise Logue could hold his own.

Even with Cripps the midfield was going to be a problem for them. Plenty of talent but very inexperienced. How do you think we'd be traveling if Brayshaw and Cerra were both playing 100% of their TOG on ball and starting every bounce?
In my view it's the reason they're last as, as others have observed, it's not like they are playing under 20 game players across every line.

Absolutely, i'm sure he'll get first crack. Curnow is far more developed at AFL level currently though and in good form...10 goals in last 2 games. Whereas Logue is only just back in the side.

What's happened to him? I recall he was a top 10 pick a few years back. Have injuries delayed his progress?

True taylor, but that's usually with Cripps in tow.
Kruezer was number 1 in the draft wasn't he??
Sure was. Fair number of high picks in the squad coming over.
FB: Newman, Casboult, Simpson
HB: Marchbank (Pick # 6), Weitering (Pick # 1), Plowman (Pick # 3)
C: Murphy (Pick # 1), Dow (Pick # 3), O'Brien (Pick # 10)
HF: E Cunow, C Curnow (Pick # 12), Cunningham
F: Zac Fisher, McGovern, Gibbons
R: Kreuzer (Pick # 1), Setterfield (Pick # 5), Walsh (Pick# 1)

There's a pick # 2, a pick # 6 and pick # 13 on their extended bench too.

Not sure whether that says more about the value of spotting elite talent or developing a winning culture. Might be both.

Most of those high picks are pretty young, and all have at least shown something as AFL players.

The reason we are s**t is because of the lack of talent in the 23-30 year old group. Who have we got out there in that range on Sunday? Newman, Casboult, Jones, Ed Curnow and Kreuzer. Be the worst in that bracket in the comp by a long way.

Another poster mentioned the fact we have guys like Dow and Walsh being played on ball 100% doesn't help us short term.
