They say that because there's an extra game this year 13 wins might not be enough to qualify. If true then we really need to win this week. Surely 14 is enough?

I just...uh

Are you actually worried we'd miss the 8?

We'd have to go out of our way to miss the 4 right now, let alone the 8 lol

To be fair, you can hold both views perfectly logically.

McStay hasn't played for months.
Those who want to rest & rotate use the argument that it's to make sure plenty of players have played in the seniors & ready for finals if needed..surely McStay would be one of those. As for players which desperately need help, surely that's Checkers..who is the biggest bodied forward we have ready to come back in? McStay.

I agree Checkers needs support. I agree that's why we have McStay.

I also think McStay needs a game in the VFL before he plays. So unless Checkers can't play at all, McStay shouldn't come straight in.

We'll see how he trains this week. He was only going to play minutes in the VFL this week anyway. If he trains well enough, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Fly picks him. But if Fly wants to give him a qtr in the VFL this week first, I wouldn't be surprised by that either. The sooner he gets in to help Checkers the better as far as I'm concerned.

My money is on it being moot by Sidey's return. Having the full list available seems too good to be true. How far away is Sidey?
About 2 weeks I think. You’re probably right, but it’s also a definite possibility that we might have this selection dilemma soon.

Nope
Play reef instead

Cheers
You told me the other day that I couldn’t see the bigger picture. You should probably take your own advice on this one, and try to work out for yourself what McStay provides that Reef can’t. Go back and watch how our forward line operated in the first couple of rounds this year if you’re struggling with that.

💯 We kicked 40 goals over those 2 rounds.

i might be wrong, but I think some are over valuing what a quarter of footy in the vfl would do for mcstay. I don’t think him playing a quarter or not impacts his chances of playing this week. Wait and see I guess. I’m tipping he will play, who goes out I’m not so sure as I don’t think it should be frampton
It's a tough one.

Murphy played 97% game time, so unlikely him.

Cox and Cameron need each other.

Frampton looked too good.

Reef’s performance was encouraging, but I lump it with the 5 from Kreuger v Casey. We’re on the premiership charge and you’re trying to get past a known quantity in McStay so you need a run like that. Even then it’s the wrong role.

I'm copping it from all sides. The oppo supporters reckon I'm getting ahead of myself, the Pie supporters think I'm being whatever the opposite of getting ahead of yourself is. 😭

Reef shouldn’t come in off one good game against a bottom team. He’s shown time and time again when he comes into seniors he’s not quite ready. Need a solid block in the vfl, not just one game
I actually think he needs a solid block of guaranteed AFL.
Which we just can't give him at the moment.

He looks a complete confidence player and exudes no body language (to date) that says he belongs at the level.

So he really needs to be told "you've got x games minimum" to take the pressure off him.
We can't do that this year due to competition for spots.

VFL won't help him translate this to AFL because every game he plays he is last in first out....
So for the moment he is injury depth only.

There was an incident in each of the last two games where Frampton was notably slow to deal with changing circumstances with ground balls in defence. I see why we got him, and have been very impressed with everything else he has done, but this dithering when the ball has to be won is a worry. It may be uncertainty about who is to go, and it is only two incidents, but in a side where this doesn't otherwise happen, I have a concern. I am mindful that McCreery has become certain in his attack on the ball with time, after being too ready to leave the creative stuff to others, so I may be jumping at shadows. What do others think?

Those two rounds were the best our forward line has looked in recent years. it seems to be that McStay's football IQ goes heavily underrated on here, as he's assumed just to be this big lumbering target man that anyone over ~193 cm on our list could plug in and replace.

He's not a big goal-kicker (Neither are Framp or Cox really) but he is a very good specialist key position forward who makes smart leads, is a team first sort, and is aggressive to the contest and compliments Mihocek extremely well. It's a bigger picture thing with him for sure.

Despite how well he has done when thrown around, i don't trust him in defense anywhere near as much as i trust the others (yet).
I couldn't put my finger on what worried me until this post.

I've been a fan since we drafted him because i thought he fit our intercepting / attacking defensive mindset really well.
But to be fair, he hasn't had much chance to play that role consistently.
No one is up to speed after what, 3 games in the role you were drafted for?

But he does hesitate and looks slow of mind in terms of making a decision when behind the ball.

He's very handy depth and flexibility, no doubt.
But Murph is ahead of him at the moment because he has lived the gamestyle for longer.

A very interesting interview with Crisp on SEN this morning, where he revealed some changes from last season.
Specifically he said we are now developing a flexible game plan compared to last year in response to teams having developed strategies to counter our 2022 style.
There are 2 or 3 different changes we make depending on what we encounter.ie hold the ball. go down the line, play slow.

It's very reassuring ( and unsurprising from this coaching group) as we approach finals that we will be making ourselves less predictable and more flexible to counter the opposition.

recall a tight contest deep in our backline where pies gained control and a quick handball was given off in framptons direction .... where reflexes and quick hands were needed he froze like a rabbit in headlights ...... not a hanging offence and certainly something coaches can work on

Especially Brisbane. One of our closest rivals on the ladder and their record at Marvel is exceptional and abysmal at the G. Awful schedule

There is a positive in that, restrict how much exposure they have at the G, certainly a good chance of playing them on a final at some stage, I'd be more confident with them having not played us there for a few years

He looks more relaxed in the ruck to me.
